Frequently Asked Questions

💡 What does “Officially Licensed for PS5” mean?

It means Western Digital collaborated directly with Sony Interactive Entertainment to test, certify, and validate this SSD specifically for PlayStation 5 consoles. It guarantees 100% hardware compatibility, ideal thermal performance, and compliance with system software updates.

💡 Does the built-in heatsink fit properly inside the PS5 expansion bay?

Yes! The custom heatsink is engineered specifically for the exact dimensions of the PS5 M.2 expansion slot. It slides directly into the drive bay and allows the metal slot door to close completely with zero clearance issues.

💡 Can I play PS5 games directly from this drive?

Yes! Because it exceeds Sony’s minimum performance requirements (achieving up to 7,300 MB/s read speeds), you can store, launch, and play both PS5 and PS4 games directly from the drive without transferring them to the internal console storage.

💡 Is this SSD compatible with the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro?

Yes! The WD_BLACK SN850P is fully compatible with all PlayStation 5 family hardware models, including the original PS5 (Disc and Digital), PS5 Slim, and PS5 Pro.

💡 How do I install the WD_BLACK SN850P into my PS5?

Installation takes only a few minutes. Turn off your console, remove the outer console cover, unscrew the metal M.2 slot cover with a Phillips screwdriver, insert the SSD into the connector at a 45-degree angle, secure it with the console screw, and replace the covers. The PS5 will automatically prompt you to format the drive upon power-on.

💡 Can I use this SSD in a gaming PC?

Yes! While it is officially certified and branded for PlayStation 5, the WD_BLACK SN850P is a standard M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 NVMe drive and works seamlessly in desktop PCs and laptops supporting M.2 PCIe Gen4 slots.
